Experience

Orange Thimble Cafe

This was my first F&B working experience. It was a fruitful experience and I gained a lot from this place. I was assigned to different roles such as kitchen staff, cashier, waitress, barista and taking charge of opening and closing the store.
My time in Orange Thimble taught me how to work with different types of people, and the importance of being flexible and adaptive as everyone has different working styles. I was trained to multi-task especially during the busy hours- making coffee and staying attentive to the customers' needs. I learned that working in the F&B field is challenging because of the long hours, from preparing the food before the store opens to cleaning up after the store is closed.

Tekmedia Solution

Working as a Sales Promoter requires long working hours, confidence and knowing your products well to explain to customers. It is challenging as there is a sales quota to hit. It is also normal to face rejections and difficult customers, and I learned that it is important to know how to handle such situations.
This job has trained me to think from different perspectives, as different customers have different needs. It is crucial to understand what customers are looking for in a product, before recommending them a suitable product. In this line of work, one has to constantly be cheerful and friendly, so that customers will be more inclined to approach you.
I have faced a lot of rejection in this line, but I still love my job because it gives me a sense of satisfaction when I see a customer happy after purchasing a product from me.

TCC Group

I worked as a banquet server for the TCC group, an agent company. They offered me the opportunity to serve in various hotels such as the JWM South Beach Hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Raffles Hotel and Shangri-la. Through experiences at various hotels, I am able to understand the challenges of organizing large scale events. It is a tedious process from setting up the area such as placing the tables and chairs and cutlery, ensuring that everything is neat and tidy. After the event, we have to clear up the tables and sometimes even set up for the next event which may be a completely different layout.
In this service line, it is important to always put a smile on your face despite being tired. I also learned how to work with strangers, because we would have to be partnered up and be in charge of serving food and beverages to certain tables. It can be stressful at times as the managers are very strict with us, in order to ensure that the event runs smoothly. As such, I have learned to work under such stressful conditions and get used to it.

Cheers NYP (TEP Experience)

Working in Cheers NYP for TEP has prepared me for the working world in the future. Being fully in charge of the convenience store, I have to ensure that the stock order is optimal. This prevents shortages of stocks and insufficient storage space for the stocks.
It was a great experience organizing the Cheers roadshow: We've got the opportunity to liaise with different suppliers to support us for our roadshow. We had managed to convince the suppliers to sponsor some goods for sampling during our roadshow. This allowed us to create a more engaging roadshow through a blind taste challenge, using the sampling goods. I have learned the importance of careful planning in events as during the roadshow, we had too many focuses. This led to a shortage of manpower. Although we were unable to hit our sales quota, the roadshow was an overall success. Stocktake planning and preparation were stressful and tedious, as it occurred shortly after the roadshow. We had to redo the layout of the store, assign and brief about different roles that everyone was given. On the day of stocktake, there were many activities happening and I had to multi-task between organizing the stocktake and finishing my tasks. Through stocktake, I've learnt the importance of planning and teamwork as it is the foundation of every project. For example, failure in assigning and briefing about the roles would had made the stock taking process messy and slow.

Bolloré Logistics (Internship)

The internship exprienece I had at Bollore Logistics (Oil & Gas Department) was very enriching and fulfiling as it allows me to understand how a freight forwarding company works on a macro level. The attachment has benefited me tremendously. Throughout the course of internship, I understood more about the supply chain industry. More importantly, gained skills and knowledge on proper planning and problem solving in a calm and professional manner. I have also attained soft skills and learnt to work with people from different backgrounds. I enjoyed my internship as I had many opportunities to experience what it is like to be a customer service assistant and understand the importance of adminstrative documents needed for freight forwarding. This experience made me realized that supply chain never stops working and the warehousing activities runs 24/7 to fulfil the customer’s needs.
Some of the challenges I’ve encountered during the 7 months of internship are the overwhelming work overload, having miscommunication with my colleagues, time management and making errors at work. I feel that the work assigned to me was not properly mentored by my supervisor as all the customer service officers have my email and will assign work to me individually. At times, I lacked proper time management which led me to over promise my mentors about the deadlines given to me.
The trucking collection project was very interesting as I have learnt what it is like to be the “middleman”. It was an out-of-the book experience which taught me meaningful values such as patience, diligence, perseverance, determination and responsibility. I was also given the opportunity to assist in the major exporter schemes.
